Happy Halloween witches and werewolves!!!
Today is my favorite day of the year, not only because it's my anniversary with my best friend and boyfriend, but it's the one day where we can let our inner darkness shine through! If I could make a list of all my favorite Halloween stuff, you would be here until Christmas.
Instead, to celebrate today's release of Poet Tongue (now available: click here!) I wanted to share my top 5 favorite werewolf stories in film and books:
1) Underworld Movie Series:
This movie series mixes a dark Gothic style vampire with kick ass action movies. The series focuses on Selene, a vampire warrior who is in the midst of a war between vampires and lycans, a race of werewolf creatures. In the midst of this feud, she finds love with a human.
It's been years since I watched the series, and I haven't found time to watch the newest installment of 2016, but this has always been my favorite scene (from Underworld: Rise of the Lycans)
2) Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King:
One of King's most underrated works, Cycle of the Werewolf follows a string of brutal attacks on a small town. The use of full-colored gory imagery and a chilling story makes a fangtastic werewolf novel that leaves you shivering!
3) Blood and Chocolate by Annette Curtis Klause:
Vivian seems like a normal teenage girl, but she is actually a werewolf who belongs to a pack. As leadership is challenged, Vivian also learns how to balance her life as a werewolf while falling in love with a boy. This book was incredible! It was one of the first werewolf novels I read, and was one of the inspirations for my novel, Poet Tongue. They also have a movie based on the novel, but it leaves out a lot of the intricate details.
4) The Blooding by Patricia Windsor:
This YA book is out of print and one of the most underrated werewolf novels out there! Maris finds an opportunity to escape her mother's overbearing ways by landing a job as a nanny in England. She soon learns the family she's looking after has a dark secret, especially the father of the household. Even though people question the strange relationship between a teenage girl and an father who's about thirty-years-old, a deeper look into the symbolism reveals the transformation as a way of Maris embracing her sexuality and confidence. It's a book you will read in one full-mooned night.
5) Werewolves In Supernatural:
Supernatural is one of my favorite shows because of the intricate biblical plot line and vast array of creatures. The show has not only covered common creatures like monsters and ghosts, but they incorporated legends from different countries as well. The werewolves in this show are snarling beasts, but sometimes, we learn that they were once humans and try to remain that way by feeding on animals, not people. Some of the main characters have been bitten, but it's rare to survive a bite. The show also uses original mythology as a way of killing the creatures that plague humanity, like silver!
From snarling beasts to peaceful shapeshifters, werewolves are abudant in our culture. I still want to explore more werewolf movies and books, so tell me your favorite in the comments below! Don't forget to check out Poet Tongue, too!
